Home-school students win state volleyball title  Home-school students win state volleyball title

October 20th the Volleyball Teams traveled to Winston Salem, NC to play in the NCHEAC Homeschool State Volleyball Tournament at Wake Forest University. Our Trailblazers played against other homeschool teams from across the state of NC.

The Middle School Girls coached by Brenda Watt, on court number two, held their own by narrowly losing to the #1 seed, the Euroclydon Storm from Orange County; they came together to take third place in the tournament by soundly defeating The Crusaders of Fayetteville. This team played excellent volleyball and was encouraged by Jessi Phillips, setter, who was named to the All Tournament team. The Middle School Volleyball Team finished their first season with 9 wins and 10 losses.

In their first appearance at the state tourney, in the second game of the day, the High School Girls volleyball team won the five game match against The Hawks from Forsyth County and was named NCHEAC Varsity Volleyball State Champions! Coach Glenna Toney was faced with additional obstacles when two players became ill at the last minute and were unable to participate. The team rallied and all players contributed, especially All Tournament selection Glenn Gibson. Joining her on the All Tournament team were Brittani Taylor and Marissa Moraga. The Varsity Volleyball team finished the season 11 wins and 4 losses.

Thanks to all of our fans who came out and supported our Trailblazers this first season!

Volleyball Trainers:

Glenna Toney played volleyball in high school on a state championship team at T C Roberson High in Skyland, NC.  Glenna played volleyball in college on scholarship at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) a NCAA division I school. She worked at several volleyball camps during summers
while at UNCC, including camps at Duke University.   She also worked as a
graduate assistant for the UNCC Volleyball Program. Glenna was offered the
head coaching position at Coastal Carolina University.   She has coached the
JV Volleyball team at Roberson High School and the Varsity and JV Volleyball teams at Erwin High School.  Glenna worked as a volleyball official for several years.  Glenna is a homeschool mother.

Kari Payne enjoyed participating in high school basketball, volleyball and
track where she lettered in all three sports.   She played for the women¹s
basketball team at Bethel College and later for the Lady Eagles of Toccoa Falls College; she was a starter on the 1986 NCCAA Championship Team at TFC.
She has coached children¹s ball locally for the past several years.  She is married to David and is the mother of Meredith and Lincoln, whom she has homeschooled for five years.

Brenda Watt played volleyball, basketball and softball at Enka High School in Enka, NC where she lettered in all three sports. Brenda also played volleyball and softball on scholarship at Spartanburg Methodist College where she was named Most Valuable in Volleyball for the '92 season. The SMC Softball team finished 9th in 1992 and 5th in 1993 in the NJCAA. Brenda has been the assistant coach for her daughter's league softball teams for the past several years.  Brenda is married to Johnny, and is the mother of  Kami, Cory, Collin, and Kirsten. She has homeschooled for 8 years.

Sidney Youngs began her volleyball career at 15 on her high school volleyball team. She played for a year on a junior olympic travelling volleyball team as a senior. She played 4 years as a starting middle hitter for Gordon College, just north of Boston, MA. She went on to coach high school volleyball at Salem Academy in Winston-Salem, NC. She has also coached 4 seasons of club volleyball in Colorado Springs, CO and here in Asheville, NC for WNC. She loves the sport and continues to play on co-ed leagues. The best part of being a coach is the opportunity to encourage and mold young women into strong, confident athletes as well as grow their relationships with each other and with Jesus Christ. She is married to Bobby and they have a cute little boy named Robin who we consider the team mascot!
